Pickleball Drop-ins & Clinics @ Ridge Sports Center - Gym
Sep 9 all-day

We offer various drop-ins and clinics including beginning and women-only sessions. Please check our current hours and event schedule for the latest drop-in dates and times.

Paddles are available and non-marking shoes are required. The sport is played on a court with the same dimensions as a doubles badminton court. The net is two inches lower than tennis, and played with a hard paddle and a polymer, which is a smaller version of a wiffle ball. With a smaller court and slower ball speed, pickleball is much easier to play than tennis.

A little pickleball trivia: the game started during the summer of 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington at the home of Congressman Joel Pritchard. He and two of his friends returned from golf and found their families bored one Saturday afternoon. They attempted to set up badminton but no one could find the shuttlecock. They improvised with a wiffle ball, lowered the badminton net, and fabricated paddles of plywood from a nearby shed. The name is said to have originated by Joan Pritchard, who said it reminded her of the “Pickle Boat crew where oarsmen were chosen from the leftovers of other boats.”

The Bend Oktoberfest, a free community event, will be held to raise funds for beautification efforts like flowers, Christmas décor, bike racks, benches, & more that keep Downtown Bend beautiful.

Traditional Bavarian foods along with seasonal and Oktoberfest brews served from our local beer sponsors Bend Brewing Company, Boneyard Beer, Crux Fermentation Project, Deschutes Brewery, Silver Moon Brewing, and Worthy Brewing. German and Austrian wines will be provided by The Wine Shop & Beer Tasting Bar. European-inspired cider from Atlas Cider Company.

Friday activities will include traditional Bavarian music, beer, cider, wine, and food. Friday also means the start of DoubleTree by Hilton Bend Oktoberfest Games including the 92/9 FM Yodeling Contest & Natural Edge Furniture Hammerschlagen Competition (race to hammer a nail into a log).

Saturday will be the OnPoint Community Credit Union Family Fest, activities will include bouncy houses, face painting, treats, and more. DoubleTree by Hilton Bend Oktoberfest Games continue with Medieval German Sword Play, The Hutch’s Bicycles Tricycle Races, Wiener Dog Parade, and the legendary Deschutes Veterinary Clinic Wiener Dog Races benefiting the Humane Society of Central Oregon held in the afternoon.

Saturday evening will include live music and the final events where participants will show their best Bend Oktoberfest spirit for cash prizes.
