Saturday, August 16 is a day for the dogs. Come out and bring your favorite canine-bring them all-to the Sisters Doggie Dash Run/Walk starting at 9 am at Sisters Park & Recreation (SPRD). There will be pet entertainment, pet product vendors and food vendors for everyone-both people and pets. A 5K walk/run and a 2-mile walk, with or without your canine friend, is open to all ages. The well-marked route from SPRD through shaded US Forest Service trails will work off some of that extra energy. Don’t have a dog? No worries-several nonprofits will have dogs available for loan and/or adoption.

Early registration for the Doggie Dash Walk/Run is through August 14: $25/participant or $50 for up to 3 participants; $5 extra to register morning of the event. All registrants receive a 2014 free membership to Friends of the Sisters Library. Register online ( www.sistersrecreation.com), pick up a registration form at the Library, then drop applications off at SPRD. Leash and rabies vaccination tags/proof required. The first 100 who register will receive a commemorative gift and doggie goody bag.

So bring the kids, the dogs and be prepared for lots of entertainment for a great cause. All proceeds benefit the Friends of the Sisters Library, in partnership with Furry Friends Foundation, and SPRD.

Paulina Plunge @ Paulina Plunge
Aug 20 all-day

Paulina Plunge

The Paulina Plunge Downhill Waterfall Mt.Bike Tour is a wet and wild family adventure for all active ages 4 to 70. We will descend over six miles down a smooth forest trail, where our friendly guides will lead you to six pristine waterfalls and two natural water slides. Exploring this natural water park will be the highlight of your Central Oregon vacation.

Gravity will be your friend, as you descend deep into the Oregon back country. Along the way you will learn the legends of the ancient indigenous people and the saga of Chief Paulina. During the length of the trip, you will descend over 2,500 vertical feet on your mountain bike. That translates into four 1-1/2 mile biking segments to each waterfall stop. The group will visit up to 6 pristine waterfalls, ranging in height from 10 to 40 feet, as well as 2 safe natural waterslides to explore and play in.

This region is considered by archaeologists to be one of the richest sights in the Northwest. Native Americans have lived in the shadow of this dynamic volcano for at least 10,000 years. When the group arrives at the waterfalls below, we’ll indulge in the traditional Paulina Plunge and then break for a snack lunch.

TOUR COST: $65 per person for all ages. Recommended age 4-70 years. Mountain bike, helmet and day pack are included.

Pickleball Drop-ins & Clinics @ Ridge Sports Center - Gym
Aug 26 all-day

We offer various drop-ins and clinics including beginning and women-only sessions. Please check our current hours and event schedule for the latest drop-in dates and times.

Paddles are available and non-marking shoes are required. The sport is played on a court with the same dimensions as a doubles badminton court. The net is two inches lower than tennis, and played with a hard paddle and a polymer, which is a smaller version of a wiffle ball. With a smaller court and slower ball speed, pickleball is much easier to play than tennis.

A little pickleball trivia: the game started during the summer of 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington at the home of Congressman Joel Pritchard. He and two of his friends returned from golf and found their families bored one Saturday afternoon. They attempted to set up badminton but no one could find the shuttlecock. They improvised with a wiffle ball, lowered the badminton net, and fabricated paddles of plywood from a nearby shed. The name is said to have originated by Joan Pritchard, who said it reminded her of the “Pickle Boat crew where oarsmen were chosen from the leftovers of other boats.”

Pickin and Paddlin

Pickin’ & Paddlin’ August 2014

What began as a couple of kayakers pickin’ tunes on the back deck after a long day on the river, has grown into a huge community celebration in to raise funds for the Bend Paddle Trail Alliance and their efforts to transform the Colorado Bridge Dam into Oregon’s first whitewater playpark. Highlights include kayak, canoe and stand up paddle board demos throughout the late afternoon, local and regional acoustic, bluegrass and Americana acts in the evening, microbrews from Bend’s best breweries, food carts, non-profit information tables and more.

With the passage of Bond Measure 9–86 in November of 2012, the majority of funding was secured for Bend Parks & Rec to construct a safe passage for tubers and a whitewater play park in place of the mill-era dam below the Colorado Bridge. The BPTA has promised to raise $900K through grants, fundraising and private donations to fund the whitewater features of the project. Currently they have $300K more to go and they need your help. All funds raised at Pickin’ & Paddlin’ go towards this cause.

Admission: $5 and children 12 and under are free. Pint glasses are $10 and come with two drink tickets for those 21 and older

The August 27th event features Student Loan from Portland, Oregon, and from here in Bend openers Second Son and Burning Moonlight.

Times:
Demos from 4 – 7 p.m.
The opener begins playing at 5 p.m. and the headliner is done by 9 p.m.

Special thanks to Deschutes Brewery and Cascade Lakes Brewing for donating the kegs for this event.
