Pickleball Drop-ins & Clinics @ Ridge Sports Center - Gym
May 20 all-day

We offer various drop-ins and clinics including beginning and women-only sessions. Please check our current hours and event schedule for the latest drop-in dates and times.

Paddles are available and non-marking shoes are required. The sport is played on a court with the same dimensions as a doubles badminton court. The net is two inches lower than tennis, and played with a hard paddle and a polymer, which is a smaller version of a wiffle ball. With a smaller court and slower ball speed, pickleball is much easier to play than tennis.

A little pickleball trivia: the game started during the summer of 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington at the home of Congressman Joel Pritchard. He and two of his friends returned from golf and found their families bored one Saturday afternoon. They attempted to set up badminton but no one could find the shuttlecock. They improvised with a wiffle ball, lowered the badminton net, and fabricated paddles of plywood from a nearby shed. The name is said to have originated by Joan Pritchard, who said it reminded her of the “Pickle Boat crew where oarsmen were chosen from the leftovers of other boats.”

3:00 pm – May 31, 2014 @ 9:00 pm

Central Oregon Beer Week

Raise your glass! Central Oregon Beer Week is May 23rd to 31st, 2014.

Central Oregon’s craft beer industry continues to thrive. Together with the region’s 26 (and counting) breweries – plus dozens of other businesses and events tailored for craft beer aficionados – COBW celebrates it all.

Kickoff Party and SMaSH Beer Fest @ O’Kanes at McMenamins Old St. Francis School
You’re invited to the release party for Central Oregon Beer Week’s signature beer style … SMaSH! Seventeen Central Oregon breweries will be pouring SMaSH (Single Malt Single Hop) craft beers made just for this event!
Admission is $20 and includes a punch card for 12 4oz tasters, and a commemorative 2014 COBW glass. Additional punch cards will be available for purchase. Food & non-alcoholic beverages will be served up by McMenamins and available for purchase. Visit our SMaSH Fest page!

Visit their website for a schedule of events!

Single Malt Single Hop Festival @ McMenamins Old Saint Francis School
3:00 pm – 9:00 pm

SMaSH

What’s a SMaSH? SMaSH is an acronym for “Single Malt and Single Hop”. Why SMaSH? The idea is to break brewing down to its basic elements and emphasize the flavor of a single malt and single hop variety. SMaSH emphasizes the flavor of a single malt and a single hop, letting both the brewer and you understand what each bring to the beer.

Some styles like Pilsners, Lagers, and IPAs work better as SMaSH beers than others do, but the style chosen by our participating Central Oregon brewers is entirely up to them, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Stop by our SMaSH Fest for a chance to taste every one of these beers!
