We offer various drop-ins and clinics including beginning and women-only sessions. Please check our current hours and event schedule for the latest drop-in dates and times.

Paddles are available and non-marking shoes are required. The sport is played on a court with the same dimensions as a doubles badminton court. The net is two inches lower than tennis, and played with a hard paddle and a polymer, which is a smaller version of a wiffle ball. With a smaller court and slower ball speed, pickleball is much easier to play than tennis.

A little pickleball trivia: the game started during the summer of 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington at the home of Congressman Joel Pritchard. He and two of his friends returned from golf and found their families bored one Saturday afternoon. They attempted to set up badminton but no one could find the shuttlecock. They improvised with a wiffle ball, lowered the badminton net, and fabricated paddles of plywood from a nearby shed. The name is said to have originated by Joan Pritchard, who said it reminded her of the “Pickle Boat crew where oarsmen were chosen from the leftovers of other boats.”

Pickin’ & Paddlin’ September 2014

What began as a cou­ple of kayak­ers pickin’ tunes on the back deck after a long day on the river, has grown into a huge com­mu­nity cel­e­bra­tion in to raise funds for the Bend Pad­dle Trail Alliance and their efforts to trans­form the Col­orado Bridge Dam into Oregon’s first white­wa­ter play­park. High­lights include kayak, canoe and stand up pad­dle board demos through­out the late after­noon, local and regional acoustic, blue­grass and Amer­i­cana acts in the evening, micro­brews from Bend’s best brew­eries, food carts, non-profit infor­ma­tion tables and more.

With the pas­sage of Bond Mea­sure 9–86 in Novem­ber of 2012, the major­ity of fund­ing was secured for Bend Parks & Rec to con­struct a safe pas­sage for tubers and a white­wa­ter play park in place of the mill-era dam below the Col­orado Bridge. The BPTA has promised to raise $900K through grants, fundrais­ing and pri­vate dona­tions to fund the white­wa­ter fea­tures of the project. Cur­rently they have $300K more to go and they need your help. All funds raised at Pickin’ & Pad­dlin’ go towards this cause.

Admis­sion: $5 and chil­dren 12 and under are free. Pint glasses are $10 and come with two drink tick­ets for those 21 and older

The Sep­tem­ber 24th event fea­tures Bend favorites Moon Moun­tain Ram­bers, The Pitch­fork Rev­o­lu­tion, and Lau­rel Brauns.

Times:
Demos from 4 – 7 p.m.
The opener begins play­ing at 5 p.m. and the head­liner is done by 9 p.m.

Spe­cial thanks to Deschutes Brew­ery and Cas­cade Lakes Brew­ing for donat­ing the kegs for this event.
